Across Switzerland – A sustainable travel across the country
Across Switzerland is a travel magazine exploring the country’s diverse landscapes and regions through a sustainable lens. The publication combines personal photography with practical travel information, showing how visitors can experience Switzerland’s natural beauty while making environmentally conscious choices.
The idea behind Across Switzerland grew from my personal experiences exploring this beautiful country. Having visited Switzerland multiple times for skiing, hiking, and simply enjoying its landscapes, I became captivated by the natural beauty that feels so different from the flat terrain of the Netherlands where I’m from. The mountains, lakes, and pristine nature offer a sense of peace and inspiration that I wanted to share with others. Now studying in Switzerland, I feel even more connected to this country and its commitment to preserving the environment for future generations. Across Switzerland is built on that appreciation—a guide where exploration meets responsibility and where travelers can experience the country’s beauty mindfully.

The project started with research into sustainable travel options and Switzerland’s most iconic destinations. Afterwards, layouts, photography, and content structure were developed in InDesign, which helped define the magazine’s visual identity and narrative flow. I spent several months visiting locations personally to capture authentic images and gather firsthand insights. Across Switzerland was designed to make it easy for readers to explore the country sustainably, all in one place. The magazine includes guides to stunning mountains, scenic hiking routes, vibrant cities, peaceful lakes, and popular ski areas. Each section highlights how travelers can reach these destinations in an environmentally friendly way, from train connections to eco-conscious choices. Making Across Switzerland a resource that inspires thoughtful exploration while celebrating the natural wonders that make this country so special.

Creating Across Switzerland taught me a lot about planning and selecting content. One of the biggest challenges was deciding which locations to include while covering different parts of the country. I underestimated how long the photography would take—visiting different regions and dealing with unpredictable mountain weather was more difficult than I expected.
The design process in InDesign went quite smoothly, though keeping the formatting consistent across different pages took some effort. My main struggle was with the writing—creating interesting and varied text for each destination without repeating myself. Every section needed to feel unique and capture what makes each location special, but I often found myself using similar words or sentence structures. Finding the right balance between providing useful information and keeping an engaging tone required several rewrites.
Adding the sustainable travel element throughout the magazine required careful research to make sure the transport options I recommended were actually eco-friendly and practical, not just there to fit the theme.
If I were to make a second edition, I would interview local people from the regions to get more authentic perspectives and create more diverse content. Despite its flaws, this project helped me appreciate editorial work more and strengthened my commitment to promoting thoughtful, sustainable travel.
