DICTIONARY

Basics

Amount of rotation

Amount of rotation on the horizontal axis in degrees

Amount of flips

Amount of rotation on the vertical axis in numbers (double, triple, etc.)

Direction of travel

Direction of the skiers travel (forward or switch)

Direction of rotation

Direction of the skiers rotation (leftside or rightside)

Ground tricks

Note: Can mostly be combined with rail or jump tricks.

Ollie/Nollie

A specific technique to jump by shifting the weight to front (nollie) or back (ollie). Similar to an ollie in skateboarding. Here's an example of a nollie onto a down rail.

Press/Manual

Shift of the weight to the front or the back to lift up either tails or tips.

Shuffle/Revert

Spinning on the snow, without jumping.

Butter

Spinning while shifting weight to front or back. Basically a combination of Press and Shuffle. Here's Colby Stevenson executing a beautiful Nosebutter 270 pretz 270.

Tokyo-Drift

Sliding sideways on the snow.In this video Khai Krepela does a Tokio Drift 450° out.

Handdrag

Touching the snow or an obstacle with your hand as an element of style. The handdrag 360 is a very common trick.

Jumps

Spin

Rotation on the horizontal axis.

Flip

Rotation on the vertical axis.

Straight Air

Jumping without spinning or flipping.

Zero Spin

The same as a Straight-Air, but taking off and landing switch. Here's Woodsy doing it really nice with a truckdriver grab.

Frontflip

Forward-flip in the vertical axis directly over the head.

Backflip

Backward-flip in the vertical axis directly over the head.

Sideflip/Lincoln Loop

Sideway-flip in the vertical axis directly over the head.

Underflip

The skier takes off of the jump forwards and in one fluid motion rotates 180° into a frontflip, landing switch. Basically a backflip with a 180° spin. Here's an underflip onto a box.

Cork

Most common off-axis rotation initiated by leaning backwards at the take-off. Commonly explained by doing a normal spin, but at the same time dropping your leading shoulder. The skier is getting off-axis, but never fully inverted. A common example is the cork 720°.

Rodeo

Off-axis rotation initiated by leaning to the side at the take-off. Similar to flatspin, but not as flippy (more sideways).

Flatspin

Off-axis backflip rotation that is fully inverted. Very similar to rodeo. A common example is the flatspin 360.

Misty

Off-axis rotation where the skier will set the trick forward and is inverted. May be performed while skiing forward or switch or off of a rail. Similar to Bio, but more inverted. A common example is the Misty 540°.

Bio

A Bio axis is corked forward. If the forward cork gets fully inverted it can be considered a Misty. Bios are less common than cork tricks, and can be recognized at take off when the athlete sets the trick to cork forward. Bios are often done with rotations of 900° degrees or more. The skier is usually getting inverted after the second spin, opposed to a Misty rotation where he's getting inverted from the first spin. Common example is the Bio 900°.

Barani

Frontflip with a 180 degrees spin.

Flair

A flair is basically a sideflip / lincoln loop in a quarterpipe. It is one of the most common quarterpipe tricks.

Rails

Frontside

Facing downhill first while initiating the spin off a rail.

Backside / Blindside

Facing uphill first while initiating the spin off a rail.

Rail-slide

Normal slide over an obstacle (sideways).

50-50

Sliding an obstacle straight, facing forward with both skis on the rail. (almost impossible on a thin rail)

Ski-slide

Sliding an obstacle straight, facing forward on one ski. Like a 50-50, but only one foot is on the obstacle. Andy Parry is famous for these.

Lip-slide

Jumping on a rail with the back part of your skis first. With the tails first if you're riding forward, noses first if you're riding switch.

Backslide

One-foot slide sideways on the back ski.

Fastslide / Frontslide

One-foot slide sideways on the front ski. Here's an example of a frontslide back 270° out.

Frontside Switchup / Frontswap

Spinning 180 degrees on a rail facing downhill. Here's a frontswap to forward.

Backside Switchup / Backswap

Spinning 180 degrees on a rail facing uphill. Here's a backswap to switch.

Frontside Surface-Switchup / Front-surface-swap

Spinning 180 degrees on a rail facing downhill without jumping.

Backside Surface-Switchup / Back-surface-swap

Spinning 180 degrees on a rail facing uphill without jumping. The skis are in contact with the rail the whole time. Here's an example of a back-surface-swap continuing 270 out.

Pretzel

Change of the direction of rotation on the rail.A common example is the 270° on pretzel 270° out (2pretz2). That means spinning left-side 270° degrees onto the rail and then spinning right-side 270° degrees off the rail.

Continuing

Keeping the same direction of rotation when spinning off a rail. It's basically the opposite of pretzel. Heres an example of a 270 on continuing 270 out.

Disaster

Jumping over the first part of an obstacle and sliding the end of it.

Tap

Jumping over an obstacle while only touching (tapping) it. Here's Antti Olilla doing a 540 with a tail tap.

Sniper-Tap

Tapping the side of an obstacle. Here's an example of a Nose-Sniper Tap while sliding a rail.

Handdrag

Touching the obstacle with your hand as an element of style.

Transfer

Jumping from one rail onto another. In this video, Joona Kangas does a Super-Fed while transfering the tubes with the frontswap.

Tranny-Finder

Jumping over an obstacle and land on the edge of it (in the transition between obstacle and snow).

Broken-Slide

Bending the knees so you slide on the inside of the ski.

K-Fed

Frontside switchup continuing backside 270 out

Super-Fed

Frontside switchup continuing backside 450 out

Britney

Backside switchup continuing frontside 270 out

Super-Britney

Backside switchup continuing frontside 450 out

Joker / Illusive

Frontside switchup, frontside switchup continuing backside 270 out

Super-Illusive

Frontside switchup, frontside switchup continuing backside 450 out
